Laryngomalacia
Laryngomalacia is a common condition, in which the tissues of the
larynx are more floppy than normal. This causes obstructed and noisy
breathing, which is particulary evident when the child inhales.
Most children can be monitored without requiring any specific intervention,
because the problem eases as the child grows. Occasionally, children
will require surgery if the obstruction is severe.
It is important to be certain of the diagnosis because other causes
of upper airway obstruction can be dangerous and require immediate
intervention. The only certain way to confirm the diagnosis of laryngomalacia
is by performing a flexible
bronchoscopy.
