Halloween Safety

The spookiest night of the year is also one of the most dangerous for kids. Four times as many childhood injuries happen on Halloween night than on any other night of the year. The most common error parents make is misjudging the traffic safety skills their kids have.

Tips to keep little goblins safe:

  • Parents should always accompany children 12 and under and trick or treat with the little ones earlier in the evening.

  • Older trick or treaters should have a curfew, and trick or treat in groups.

  • Always cross the street at crosswalks or corners. Do not cross from behind parked cars. Always stop before crossing, look both ways and cross as a group.

  • Kids should only visit well-lit houses and remain outside houses that are unfamiliar.

  • Everyone should carry a flashlight after dark.

  • All kids should carry their name, address and phone number with them, and teens should carry a cell phone or change for emergency calls.

  • Parents should inspect all treats at home before anyone eats them—don't eat treats while trick or treating.

  • Keep porches and doorways well-lit and clear of any debris.

  • Do not place lighted pumpkins anywhere near the entrance, where they could be a hazard to visitors.

  • Do not give out small candies, peanuts, gum or small toys—they can become choking hazards.
