  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

  • Clinical Programs

  • Approximately 1000 minimally invasive procedures are performed annually at Rhode Island Hospital. The driving force for our clinical programs is the belief that the least invasive procedure is the best for our patients. We also strongly believe in preoperative education as a major step in improving the result of any procedure.

The division of minimally invasive surgery at Rhode Island Hospital and Brown University provides a broad clinical experience in advanced and emerging laparoscopic and thorascopic procedures.

    These areas include:

    • The treatment of swallowing disorders, such as GERD and achalasia
    • Solid organ surgery, such as adrenalectomy and splenectomy
    • Benign colon surgery
    • Inguinal and abdominal hernia repair
    • Routine and advanced biliary surgery
    • The development of laparoscopic spine surgery (in conjunction with the department of orthopedics)
    • The development of laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy (in conjunction with the division of transplantation).
