Traveling on a cruise can be one of the most exciting experiences
of your life. It's a great time for fun, family and laughter. Before
you decide to set sail in search of the perfect vacation, here are
some tips to make your voyage an enjoyable one.
- Contact a travel medicine clinic: If you are planning
on taking a cruise to an exotic destination, contact the
travel medicine service at the Miriam Hospital at least four
to six weeks in advance to find out about immunizations and preventive
medications you may need.
- Leave a copy of your itinerary: In case of emergencies,
it's a good idea to leave a copy of your itinerary with family
and friends.
- Make arrangements for special needs: Before making your
travel arrangements, contact the cruise line to find out about
handicapped accessibility or if dietary needs can be met.
- Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and safety devices:
Stay safe by learning evacuation procedures and ensuring that
there are enough life jackets stored in your cabin.
- Use Sunscreen: The sun is strong on shore but, even stronger
on water. To prevent harmful effects from the sun, make sure you
wear a sunscreen containing a sun protection factor of 15 or higher.

- Avoid Becoming a Target: When traveling, keep your cash
supply and valuables on the ship in a secure place, such as a
safe, and try not to go anywhere alone, if possible.
- Know the schedule: Don't get left behind. Before leaving
the ship for any reason, always check the ship's departure schedule.
- Know the weather conditions: You can't control the weather,
but you can control when you plan your trip. Avoid taking your
vacation during hurricane season. If you are heading below the
equator; remember, if it's summer here, it's winter there.
