Youth Learn about Careers in Health Care
Lifespan
offers several programs for youth who are interested
in exploring careers in health care. The volunteer department
at each hospital can help set up opportunities for youth
to “shadow” professionals from different
areas. They also accept requests for those students
who apply for internships
through their school or college. One of the best ways
to learn about health care is to apply to become
a volunteer.
Another opportunity Lifespan offers is the Summer
Youth Employment Program. Students are recruited
to work for seven weeks each summer in one of our four
partner hospitals. This program is the largest of its kind
in southeastern New England.
“We’re recruiting the workforce of tomorrow,”
says John Morgan, human resources Community liaison
specialist and head of the Lifespan Summer Youth Employment
Program. Lifespan continues to build relationships with
local students to help encourage long-term recruitment
of youth into the health care industry.
Students have the opportunity to work in a variety
of departments, such as transport, respiratory care,
diagnostic imaging, nursing, physical therapy, central
processing and cardiac rehabilitation. Both of our youth
programs allow us to work closely with the communities
we serve.
Last year’s program was incredibly successful,
allowing nearly three times as many students to participate
as in previous years. Morgan hopes to continue to build
the program each summer.
