Meet Us at the Beach

More than one million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Of the three types (squamous, basal and melanoma), melanoma is the least common, but the most deadly. The good news is, both basal and squamous cell carcinoma have a greater than 95 percent five-year cure rate, if detected and treated early. The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads is 99 percent.

To help early detection and prevent the spread of skin cancer, The Comprehensive Cancer Center at Rhode Island, The Miriam and Newport hospitals, in coordination with ABC6 and University Dermatology, present Sun Smarts.

For five Fridays during July and August, free skin cancer screenings, educational materials and referrals will be available to you at beaches in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. A University Dermatology physician or resident will offer skin cancer screenings in a semi-private examining area and provide information about safe sunning and skin cancer. Referral information for health care professionals will be available and you will receive a free gift for stopping by to learn about sun safety.

Marsha Weiss, RN, director of community health services, believes that by reaching out to Rhode Islanders at the beaches, they can make more of an impact in preventing skin cancer than by simply inviting families to get screened at the hospital. They hope to educate many families and children about the importance of sun safety.

sun smartsLifespan has been partnering with ABC6 for over five years, providing staff and physicians for Sun Smarts. Lifespan Community Health Services and Graceway Pharmaceuticals support Sun Smarts.
