Newport Hospital Opens Renovated Floor with New Space to Care for Kids

Renovated and ready to roll, Newport Hospital opened the fifth floor of the Turner Building to patients this month. The Kahn Adult and Pediatric Floor is devoted to medical, surgical and pediatric care. Most of the rooms are private, and the floor provides 21 beds for adults and a new, 9-bed pediatric unit.

The floor features telemetry for monitoring cardiac patients, who can now receive care in any of the hospital’s three medical inpatient units. The telemetry capability also helps the floor meet Newport Hospital’s standard of care: patients can receive the same treatment they need no matter where they are moved throughout the hospital.

The final phase of renovations to the building’s three inpatient medical floors, Turner 5 is designed to create a comfortable healing environment with a soothing, nautical décor of seafoam greens, deep blues, and sand colors. All the new rooms include flat-screen TVs and most have private bathrooms with showers. A bariatric room provides a lift-free environment for patients who are not mobile or who weigh more than 300 pounds. Two adult and two pediatric rooms can convert to double rooms should the need arise.

The private pediatric rooms are designed to allow parents to stay with their children. Additionally, a pediatric security system and two rooms equipped for antenatal testing or obstetrical outpatient testing were included in the renovation.

“Any improvement that can be made to the hospital benefits the community. We are on an island, and want to make sure our patients are getting the state-of-the-art technology they need,” says Denise Sullivan, RNC, MSN, director of maternal child health and Turner 6 rehabilitation. “As technology evolves so rapidly, we want to continue our commitment to advanced care for the community, and this represents the latest phase in working toward that goal.”
