Donating to The Miriam Hospital

Kathleen Hittner, MDA Message from Our President and CEO

The Miriam Hospital is proud of the accomplishments of the past, invested in the developments of the present and looking forward to the advances of the future. As president and CEO of The Miriam Hospital for the past five years, I have witnessed with pride the ways in which we have built upon our foundation of excellence. We will continue to cultivate that legacy in the years to come.

In the last five years, The Miriam Hospital, with the support of Lifespan, has strengthened its commitment to quality by investing more than $10 million per year in capital improvements. These improvements have included a CT scan for the radiology department, advances in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, development of the Comprehensive Cancer Center, the opening of the first women’s cardiac care center in the state and much more.

Presently, The Miriam is utilizing some of the latest technological innovations. Physician Order Management (POM), a system used by fewer than 20 percent of the nation's hospitals, has become a daily part of providing the safest, most advanced care at The Miriam. The system provides physicians with more timely and complete access to patient information, reduces medical error and decreases the need for duplicate tests.

Lifespan and its hospitals have been recognized for their implementation of information technology. For the fourth consecutive year, Lifespan was awarded the "Most Wired Award" by the journal of the American Hospital Association for its use of information technology to improve patient care. CIO Magazine also awarded us an honor for implementation of information technology.

In 2006, we anticipate the arrival of a new electrophysiology laboratory that will provide innovative care and advance the treatment of patients with abnormal heart rhythms. We will expand the Physician Order Management system to include medication administration and charting. Landscaping of our campus will continue to better blend with the neighborhood surroundings. Construction of our new building continues, and its eagerly awaited completion in 2007 will be the impetus of a new era for superior patient care at The Miriam.

I hope that you are proud of the accomplishments of the past, the strengths of the present and the promises of the future. Without you, The Miriam would be unable to stand as strongly.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Hittner, MD
