Rena Wing, PhD

Rena Wing, PhD, is an expert in the behavioral treatment of obesity and particularly its application to type II diabetes. Wing is well known for her role as co-developer of the National Weight Control Registry, a nationwide research study that has identified more than 4,000 individuals who have lost significant amounts of weight and kept it off for at least one year. Much of her research focuses on maintaining weight loss and developing effective lifestyle interventions to stop regain. Wing has also specifically studied the effects of social and home environments on weight loss and if internet technologies can be incorporated into a successful behavioral therapy program.

Wing has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed articles in journals relating to obesity and diabetes and served as principal or co-principal investigator in several grant funded research projects on this issue. Currently, she is the principal investigator of a $5 million, NIH funded study determining the effect of weight loss on urinary incontinence. In addition, Wing is principal investigator at The Miriam Hospital site for a fifteen-center trial entitled, "Study of Health Outcomes of Weight Loss" and serves as chairperson of this multi-site study.

Wing received the TOPS Award for Outstanding Achievement given by the North Atlantic Association for the Study of Obesity and serves on the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Task Force on the Prevention and Treatment of Obesity.

Wing is a graduate of Connecticut College and holds both a master of arts and a doctorate in social psychology from Harvard University. She is a professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown Medical School.
