Barbara Roberts, MD

Barbara Roberts, MD, is an expert in the field of women's cardiac health. As director of the Women's Cardiac Center at The Miriam Hospital in Providence, RI, and an associate clinical professor of medicine at Brown Medical School, she is a pioneer in women's cardiovascular health. Roberts was the first female cardiologist in Rhode Island and also the first woman accepted into the Gorlin cardiology fellowship at the former Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.

Roberts has long been passionate about women's rights and women's health issues, particularly heart disease. She is dedicated to raising public awareness around the fact that women with heart disease often experience different symptoms than men with the same condition. Roberts has helped to shift the focus of research studies to include both men and women instead of relying on the results of previous studies only analyzing men. Currently, she is involved in a study researching the long-term benefits of cardiac rehabilitation in both men and women.

To address the international epidemic of heart disease in women, Roberts is involved in ProCOR, an email and Internet-based organization committed to global cardiovascular health and especially women's heart health in the developing world.

Roberts lectures across the country on the topic of heart disease in women, discussing how gender bias may contribute to the problem, and providing a common sense guide to treatment and reducing risk. Roberts has authored the book, How to Keep From Breaking Your Heart: What Every Woman Needs to Know about Cardiovascular Disease. She was invited by First Lady Laura Bush to the White House in February 2004 to support "Heart Truth," a national campaign that encourages women to learn more about heart disease and ways to prevent it. Roberts also serves as an inaugural member of the advisory board of Woman's Day magazine.
