Ultrasound
How to Prepare for an Ultrasound
If your doctor has scheduled you to have a procedure (biopsy, drainage or
aspiration) performed in the ultrasound department at The Miriam Hospital, here's how you should prepare:
- Abdominal Ultrasound: Do not eat or drink anything after
midnight or for 6 hours before
the test if it is scheduled after noon.
- Pelvic Ultrasound:
For women: Drink 64 oz. of water
1 hour
before your appointment. Do not urinate before the procedure, as a
full bladder is necessary to make the procedure successful.
For men: Drink 32 oz. of water
1 hour
before your appointment.
- Thyroid Ultrasound: No special preparation is
necessary.
- Transrectal Ultrasound of the Prostate: Preparations are
given to the patient by the patient's physician.
