Since 1994, The Miriam Hospital has been one of the 30 sites in the world researching and testing HIV vaccines in the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN). The long-term goal is to develop a vaccine that is 100 percent effective and protects everyone from infection, although a partially effective vaccine could still have a major impact on controlling the epidemic.
Participation in vaccine trials has increased over the years, but community support is essential in efforts to break down stigma and myths about HIV vaccine research. Despite popular belief, it is impossible to contract HIV from participating in a vaccine trial.
