Evaluation and Diagnosis
If you think you are having a heart attack … It is reassuring to know that the majority of patients who enter the emergency department complaining of chest pain are not having a heart attack. If you are having a heart attack or acute coronary syndrome, our cardiologists will determine whether you require immediate treatment and, if needed, cardiovascular specialists are available to treat you quickly and effectively, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Time is muscle. Every minute counts and any delays lead to loss of additional heart muscle. Having the most efficient and effective team at your side is crucial to successful outcomes.
Last year, more than 40,000 people received emergency care at The Miriam Hospital. Our emergency department is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and seventeen board-certified emergency physicians and forty nurses staff the department. We offer exceptional cardiac services, including 24-hour interventional cardiology for emergency cardiac catheterization and heart attack surgery. TheMiriam Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital both provide 24-hour emergency angioplasty to open blocked vessels of the heart to allow oxygen flow. Studies show that angioplasty is the best way to treat a severe heart attack, especially when done quickly.

In addition, the hospital offers 23-hour observation admissions for diagnostic evaluation of acute chest pain. Cardiology consultation is available on a 24-hour basis. To contact the emergency department, please call 401-793-3000.
