X-ray, Fluoroscopy and IVP
Preparing for Your Exam
- For X-rays of the chest, abdomen, spine or extremities:
No special preparation is necessary.
- For a barium swallow:
Do not eat after midnight before the exam. You may take routine
medications with a sip of water before the exam.
- For a barium enema:
Obtain Fleet Enema Prep Kit #1 from our department 2 days
prior to your study in order to begin the prep the day before the exam
is scheduled. Follow instructions included in the kit.
- For a small bowel series:
Do not eat after midnight before your exam.
- For an upper GI series:
Do not eat after midnight before your exam.
- For an IVP:
Obtain a 6-ounce bottle of magnesium citrate from our department 2
days prior to your exam. On the day before the exam, have only clear
liquids and do not eat or drink after midnight.
