Vascular and interventional radiology (V/IR) is a division of the department of radiology. It is a branch of medicine that focuses on minimally invasive and surgery-sparing procedures, with the use of image-guided techniques. Specially trained V/IR staff members perform specialized tests to investigate and treat abnormalities in blood vessels. Abnormalities are commonly treated by angioplasty (using a balloon-type catheter to open up blood vessels). Other areas of the body that can be treated with V/IR procedures include the liver, kidneys, stomach and spine.
At The Miriam Hospital, a designated Stroke Center, V/IR can also play a role in the treatment of stroke when it is combined with the use of a specialty catheter, equipment and drugs designed to remove or dissolve the blood clot that caused the stroke.
Other procedures performed in the V/IR division include nephrostomy, chemoembolization, vertebroplasty and placement of central venous access catheters, dialysis catheters, chemotherapy ports and PICC lines (peripherally-inserted central catheters).
Radiologists in the V/IR division are board-certified and fellowship trained in this sub-specialty area.
