Collegiate Nurse Internship Programs

From the students

"There is a limited amount of clinical exposure available to student nurses, which is why I decided to seek an internship at The Miriam Hospital. My professors hold The Miriam Hospital with the highest regard and encourage students to take advantage of the internship programs to gain experience. The professionalism and competence of the nursing staff at Miriam have upheld the reputation of this hospital. Working one on one with a preceptor has accelerated my learning curve and prepared me to assume increased levels of responsibility."

Dennis A Tomaz, CNI

"I have been a CNI for over a year on 3-East. The experience has been invaluable. I have learned more in one year as a CNI than I ever could have in school alone. My increased comfort level with nursing procedures and patients in general has enabled me to feel confident and competent in my clinicals. The nurses on 3-East have been very supportive and have provided me with opportunities on the unit. I look forward to transitioning to the role of RN in a familiar and supportive environment. I would recommend being a CNI at The Miriam Hospital to every nursing student. I feel like being a CNI has set me up for success!"

Patricia Mojzak, CNI

The Miriam Hospital offers two collegiate nurse internship programs for junior and senior year nursing students: The Miriam Hospital Collegiate Nurse Internship Program and the Advanced Collegiate Nurse Internship Program (Lifespan Program). Both programs have been designed to assist future nurses in making a smooth transition from student nurse to graduate nurse. Collegiate nurse interns become preferred candidates for our graduate nurse residency program.

The Miriam Hospital Collegiate Nurse Internship Program

Associate and Baccalaureate nursing students are eligible to participate in The Miriam Hospital Collegiate Nurse Internship Program. This program consists of two collegiate nurse intern (CNI) levels.

  • Student nurses may begin in their junior year as a CNI Level I, which provides the opportunity for the nursing student to master basic nursing skills and to develop the organizational skills necessary to function in today's acute care setting.
  • CNI Level II allows the senior nursing student to shadow specially trained, registered nurses on the unit of their choice.

Advanced Collegiate Nurse Internship Program (Lifespan Program)

To be eligible for this program the candidate must:

  • Be enrolled as a second semester junior in a baccalaureate nursing program
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
  • Commit to completing 900 hours of training with a preceptor (mentor) by the time of graduation
