Nursing at The Miriam Hospital
Programs
The GENESIS Project
(Providing a Geriatric-friendly Environment through
Nursing Evaluation and Specific Interventions
for Successful healing.)
The GENESIS Project is a program that was developed and implemented
by nurses. It employs a three-pronged approach to caregiving, involving
education, environmental changes and the use of protocols. A formal
CEU-approved education program related to geriatric nursing care
is provided for nurses working on the medical/surgical units.
Ongoing geriatric education for all staff is provided through weekly
interdisciplinary patient care conferences. Unit and patient-specific
environmental changes are underway, as well as changes in the way
unit ancillary personnel are being utilized. Based on evidence found
in the literature, a multidisciplinary team that included staff
nurses developed protocols for sleep, nutrition and mobility.
Nurses at The Miriam Hospital are leading the way in improving
outcomes for our older adult patients, guided and sustained by Magnet
ideals and evidence-based practice philosophy.
