Delirium

Some older patients may experience delirium, especially when they are in an unfamiliar setting. The GENESIS program has found ways to help patients who experience delirium.

The GENESIS program helps patients by:

  • Always addressing the patient by name
  • Reminding the patient that he or she is at The Miriam Hospital
  • Telling the patient the date, the time of day and what the next event of the day is
  • Reducing the noise in the room
  • Reducing the lighting in the room
  • Making sure the patient uses his or her glasses and/or hearing aides
  • Using pet therapy and music therapy
  • Frequently reassessing the patient for pain
  • Reducing or eliminating the use of medication that may contribute to delirium

For more information about the GENESIS program, please call Lisa Baumhover, RN, geriatric clinical nurse specialist, at 401-793-3616.
