The Day of Surgery

Family Liaison
When you arrive for your procedure, a family liaison representative will ask you to identify one person the physician can speak with following your surgery. To ensure patient confidentiality, medical information will be given only to the primary contact person. The name and phone number of this individual will be placed on your chart.

We ask that this individual relay information regarding your health status to other members of your family and to your friends. If you have any questions or are unable to identify someone to serve as your contact person, please speak with your nurse.

It is important that you arrive on time for your surgery. Plan to be at the hospital about an hour and a half prior to your scheduled procedure, unless otherwise instructed. If you are late, your surgery may be delayed and you will delay other patients. Free parking is available in the outpatient parking lot on the corner of Summit Avenue and Fifth Street. (Get directions.)

Please remember to bring your insurance card(s) with you on the day of your surgery. If you have questions about your insurance coverage, please call a patient financial services representative at 401-444-6966 before your surgery.

When you arrive at the hospital, please check in at the reception desk. As soon as the pre-operative nursing staff is ready for you, a nurse will accompany you to a private changing area. A comfortable waiting area is available for your family and friends. Depending on the anticipated length of your surgery and recovery, they may choose to leave a telephone number where they can be reached once your surgery is complete.

Personal belongings
Lockers are available for your personal belongings. Once you have changed into your hospital gown, robe and slippers, and your belongings are secured in a locker, you will be brought to the pre-operative area. If you will be admitted to the hospital, please have a relative take your belongings; rooms are not assigned until you are in recovery.

Preparations
In the pre-operative area, the nurse will prepare you for surgery by teaching you about your surgery, verifying your medical information and taking your blood pressure and pulse. Depending on your procedure, you may receive a pre-operative shave or scrub. An IV will be used to provide you with the fluids and medications you will need during surgery. At this time, an anesthesiologist will speak with you about your anesthesia.

After your operation, you will be taken to the recovery room. If you are required to stay at the hospital overnight, you will receive the necessary admission information.
