The Miriam Gala & Auction
A “Roaring” Success: Annual Gala and Auction Exceeds all Goals - Raises over $1 million for The Miriam
The 90-minute event was emceed by “celebrity” host, Robert Redford, and showcased some amazing live entertainment, courtesy of the SweetBeats band and tap dancers, Will and Ally; both of whom helped transport guests back to the era of prohibition, flappers, and all things glamorous. Professional auctioneer, Harry Santa-Olalla, presided over two very lively auction segments and encouraged hundreds of donors to pledge their support. The evening also featured a moving story from a patient, his family, and his team of physicians from The Miriam who discussed the impact advanced treatments and clinical trials can have on outcomes.
Although unable to be together in person, hundreds of Miriam Hospital friends and supporters took to Lifespan Health’s YouTube channel for a special combination of the hospital’s Annual Meeting and Miriam People Celebration of Tradition in mid-November. From the safety and comfort of their homes, familiar faces were eager to celebrate both the impact of philanthropy and the lasting impact of retiring hospital president Arthur Sampson.
The Miriam Hospital Cares - A Virtual Salute
First-Ever Virtual Event Draws 300+ Guests, Raises $330,000 for The Miriam
During a first-of-its-kind in the nearly 100-year history of The Miriam Hospital, the hospital’s largest fundraiser moved online, drawing more than 300 guests and raising $330,000 on Thursday, July 16. Dubbed The Miriam Hospital Cares, the live, half-hour virtual event was a tremendous alternative to the hospital’s traditional annual Gala & Auction, which was canceled in response to the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis.
For thirty, action-packed minutes, Miriam friends from all over flocked to their computers and mobile devices to show their support for frontline heroes and salute their lifesaving work amid a global pandemic.
The event was emceed by local radio host, Tara Granahan of WPRO, and featured an inspirational opening message from celebrity guest Meredith Vieira and a moving vocal performance by Rhode Island’s own Billy Gilman. Miriam Hospital President Arthur J. Sampson shed light on the impact of the coronavirus on the hospital, followed by a COVID-19 survivor and Miriam patient sharing their story.
Capping off the evening was a special Moment of Giving, led by Harry Santa-Olalla, that saw hundreds of donors pledge their support to help create respite rooms for hospital staff, the acquisition of additional U/V disinfecting lights, and fund The Miriam’s areas of greatest need.
The Miriam Hospital extends its heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to everyone who helped to make The Miriam Hospital Cares a success beyond our wildest expectations!
On Saturday, May 11, The Miriam Hospital took more than 450 guests back in time to Rydell High when the hospital transformed the Wheeler School Van Norman Field House for its 2019 gala and auction, Grease is the Word! Inspired by the iconic musical turned film, the signature event raised a total of $702,830.
