Our Mission

Neurosciences: Brain Research

The Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute is dedicated to making breakthroughs in brain science, developing them into effective tests and treatments and quickly delivering these new models of medical care to patients. The Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute brings together the best brain physicians and researchers from Rhode Island Hospital and its Hasbro Children’s Hospital, Brown University and the Brown Institute for Brain Science, Butler Hospital, Emma Pendleton Bradley Hospital, and the Providence VA Medical Center to provide the highest caliber patient care and exceptional basic, translational, and clinical research. Its physicians and scientists are uniquely equipped to conduct high-impact research focused on three areas:

  • Disorders of the developing brain, such as autism spectrum, attention deficit,  bipolar and other mood disorders, and schizophrenia
  • Diseases of the aging brain, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson's, and dementia
  • Restoring function to the damaged brain using leading-edge technologies and new rehabilitation methods, including brain-machine interfaces and deep brain stimulation, to treat disorders and psychiatric diseases

Institute physicians and scientists receive major awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and competitive fellowships from private foundations. Researchers are also members of leading national and international research networks. Partner institutions have made significant investments in clinical facilities and research infrastructure, including new laboratories and next-generation equipment for brain imaging and gene sequencing.
