Welcome to the Adolescent Weight Management Program at Hasbro Children's Hospital
Hasbro Children's Hospital’s adolescent weight management program, CHANGES (Creating Healthy Attitudes, Nutrition Goals and Exercise Strength), focuses on helping teens who are struggling with overweight or obesity. Our physicians, psychologists, surgeons, nutritionists, and physical therapists work as a team to guide adolescents and their families in developing healthier lifestyles and gaining control over their weight.
One of every three children and adolescents in the United States today is either overweight or has obesity, with significant increases seen since the 1970s. If you are an adolescent struggling with excess weight, you are not alone.
Many teenagers today find it hard to maintain a healthy weight. Many parents struggle to help their teens develop healthy eating and exercise habits.
Hasbro Children's Hospital treats teenagers suffering from the common problem of unhealthy weight, which can contribute to health problems that previously weren’t seen until adulthood — high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and elevated blood cholesterol. Furthermore, children with obesity are more prone to low self-esteem, negative body image and depression.
Who Is the CHANGES Program For?
The CHANGES program primarily focuses on teens between age 12 and 18 who are struggling with excess weight. However, children as young as four may be evaluated, according to their need. Family and caregivers are included in the initial consultation, so that all members of the household can work together to achieve a healthier lifestyle.
Insurance coverage is typically available for the initial evaluation and for individual and family treatment meetings. We recommend that you check with your insurer in advance to learn what costs are covered. Please call us at 401-793-8829 for more information.
