Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Additional Vaccine Doses

Additional doses of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are now available for Rhode Islanders who are immunocompromised and at increased risk for COVID-19 complications.

Doses will be available for those who received two doses of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. (Those who received the Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccine are not eligible at this time.)

Many options are available to receive the vaccine and those who meet eligibility requirements are encouraged to get an additional dose as soon as possible.

Who Is Eligible?

Rhode Islanders who received both doses of either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine and who are moderately to severely immunocompromised are eligible for third doses. This includes those who:

  • Are currently being treated for cancer, are within a year of chemoimmunotherapy, or are watchful waiting for active hematologic malignancies
  • Have received an organ transplant and are taking an immunosuppressive medication
  • Have received a stem cell transplant in the past two years (or are taking immunosuppressive medication)
  • Have a condition that causes moderate or severe immunodeficiency (for example, DiGeorge syndrome or Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
  • Have advanced or untreated HIV infection
  • Are actively being treated with high-dose corticosteroids (more than 20 mg prednisone or its equivalent per day), alkylating agents, antimetabolites, transplant-related immunosuppressive drugs, cancer chemotherapeutic agents classified as severely immunosuppressive, tumor-necrosis (TNF) blockers, and other biologic agents that are immunosuppressive or immunomodulatory

Those who are eligible will be asked to attest that they are moderately to severely immunocompromised. They will not be required to provide documentation of their health status.

Whenever possible, the third dose will be the same type (Moderna or Pfizer) that was received previously. However, interchangeability of the two vaccines is acceptable.

Please allow at least 28 days between a second and third dose of the vaccine.
