Lifespan and Rhode Island Hospital have partnered with Rhode Island state leaders to develop an Alternative Hospital Site at the Rhode Island Convention Center to provide care for hospitalized COVID-19 patients when additional hospital space is needed for more seriously ill patients.

The site is designed for patients still requiring hospital-level care. It offers the same services available to patients at the hospital, such as physicians and nurses with clinical expertise and an emergency physician on-site 24 hours a day, case management, interpreter services, pharmacy, and laboratory. The site includes a patient respite area with comfortable upholstered furniture and a view of the city. The entire space has negative air flow to avoid the spread of virus. Meals are prepared and delivered to patients just as they are in the main hospital.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Alternative Hospital Site part of a hospital?
Lifespan’s Alternative Hospital Site is set up to provide care and service as part of Rhode Island Hospital under Rhode Island Hospital's license. Care is provided by Lifespan doctors, nurses, and other Lifespan care team members.

How will patients get there, and will it cost them anything for transportation?
Lifespan will provide an ambulance for each patient’s transport. Patients will not be charged for transportation.

Will loved ones be able to visit patients in the Alternative Hospital Site?
The Alternative Hospital Site will operate with the same rules as the main hospital. To reduce the likelihood of COVID-19 spread, the main hospital does not allow visitors at this time, so the Alternative Hospital Site will not allow visitors at this time. We realize this is difficult for patients and families and we ask for your understanding.

Who is the Alternative Hospital Site set up to care for?
This site is set up to provide care and services for stable hospital COVID-19 patients. The space is staffed with physicians and care team members to provide the same level of care as at Rhode Island and The Miriam hospitals. It was designed to allow more freedom of movement as patients complete their hospital recovery. The Alternative Care Hospital Site will also help us by freeing up space for other patients who need hospital-level services.
