Same-Day Discharge Joint Replacement

Total joint replacement was traditionally considered an inpatient surgical procedure that required a few days of recuperation in the hospital. With total joint replacements becoming one of the most commonly performed procedures in orthopedics, advances have been made in techniques and technology to improve not only the procedure itself, but the patient’s recovery.

At the Total Joint Center, we are at the forefront of these advances and have refined our process to provide patients the latest treatment options with superior outcomes. We consistently perform better than the national average in clinical outcomes and patient experience, with lower rates of infections, fewer readmissions, and faster returns home after surgery.

If you are planning to have a hip, shoulder, or knee replacement, you may be a candidate for same day discharge.

Replace the Joints, Recover at Home

More people are staying active as part of a healthy lifestyle. While that’s great news, all that activity can take a toll on our joints as we age.

What Comes After Total Joint Replacement?

Total joint replacement, including knee and hip replacement, is rapidly becoming one of the most commonly performed procedures in orthopedics.

What Is a Same-Day Discharge Joint Replacement?

Advanced surgical techniques as well as updated anesthesia methods and post-surgical protocols have led to improved pain control in patients who have a new joint implant. That means you can begin rehabilitation and become mobile sooner after surgery than ever before.

This also leads to more rapid recovery and shorter hospital stays.

Traditionally, patients stay in the hospital for an average of one day after a joint replacement. Those who are medically qualified and approved by their surgeon for same-day discharge joint replacement are discharged home on the day of surgery.

After a same-day discharge, patients will:

  • Receive a home care physical therapy evaluation and subsequent treatments
  • Recover in the comfort of familiar surroundings

Research shows that individuals can recover safely and efficiently in the comfort of their own home with guidance from a home-based physical therapist. Some studies have even shown a lower rate of complications in those who go directly home.

At your initial pre-admission testing evaluation, you will be screened with the risk assessment and prediction tool to determine if a same-day discharge would be appropriate. You will discuss the process and requirements with a member of the Total Joint Center Team.
