PGY1 and PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency Program

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accreditation standard provides criteria that every program must meet in order to receive and maintain accreditation. This program follows the ASHP-approved PGY1/PGY2 health-system pharmacy administration and leadership (HSPAL) residency competency areas, goals and objectives.

Residents will have the opportunity to experience diverse pharmacy practice environments in a multi-hospital health system, including inpatient, retail and specialty pharmacies, ambulatory clinics, and infusion centers at the third largest hospital in New England. Residents in this program will also take on some of the administrative responsibilities of system-wide committees and programs, such as Lifespan's Controlled Substances Diversion Prevention Program and the federal 340B Drug Program.

Purpose

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs in general build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, leadership, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

Program graduates of the combined PGY1/PGY2 HSPAL residency will be prepared to build strong careers in health system administration as a result of exposure to a variety of pharmacy practice environments and cultivation of public speaking, writing, financial management, and supervisory skills. In addition, graduates will be prepared to function as adjunct faculty for pharmacy students on rotation and in classroom learning experiences at the College of Pharmacy. 

Goals

The residency program will provide residents with specific learning/practice experiences designed to enable the resident to expand the scope of his or her practice skills. The program objectives and goals are based on a standard list provided by ASHP and reflect our program’s purpose.

Program Description

This program offers comprehensive administrative, managerial, supervisory, and leadership experience in a wide array of pharmacy practice environments. The health-system pharmacy administration and leadership resident will be mentored for continued growth and excellence requisite to administering and leading an integrated health care system pharmacy.

Supervision and Work Ethic

The resident is expected to achieve the objectives of the residency program related to both administrative and professional practice skills. The resident reports to and is supervised by the rotation preceptor and the residency program director. During staffing, the resident is under the supervision of the pharmacist-in-charge.

Hours of practice vary according to the requirements set forth by the preceptor and director. The resident is expected to be present in body, mind and spirit at all assigned activities, including meetings, education classes and administrative activities. An eight-hour day is a minimum requirement for physical presence on site during assigned work days.

The work of the department is the resident’s most important commitment. Working outside the residency program (moonlighting) is strongly discouraged, especially at the beginning of the residency. To work overtime, the resident must be trained in the area. Moonlighting and overtime work must be approved by the residency program director and hours worked will be reported on a monthly basis by each resident.
