Adolescent Sleep, Part I: A Primer

In this talk, Mary A. Carskadon, PhD, will outline the fundamental patterns of sleep and circadian rhythms across the second decade of life and describe how these processes change across the teenage years in response to biological and social pressures.

The learning objectives of this presentation include:

  • Gaining an awareness of patterns of sleep and circadian rhythms during adolescence.
  • Understanding the developmental changes in sleep and circadian rhythms over the second decade.
  • Recognizing how a “perfect storm” of biological (e.g., puberty) and social pressures (e.g., school start times) impact sleep and circadian rhythms for teens.

Adolescent Sleep, Part II:  Importance for Mental and Behavioral Health

Jared M. Saletin, PhD, Associate Director, Bradley Hospital Sleep Research Laboratory, and Director, Bradley Hospital Sleep and Circadian Rhythms Research Methods Core

In this talk, Jared M. Saletin, PhD, will briefly describe how sleep and biological rhythms during adolescence contribute to teen mental health with a focus on attention-deficit/hyperactivity-disorder (ADHD).

The learning objectives of this presentation include:

  • Understanding rates of sleep disruption and mental health in teenage years.
  • Appreciating links between sleep and mental and behavioral health for teens.
  • Recognizing how some sleep interventions may aid mental and behavioral health treatments (e.g., for ADHD).
