Meet the Team
Our skilled and experienced team provides services for every phase of illness and recovery, from evaluation, diagnosis and treatment to survivorship care. Our pediatric surgeons are well versed in the surgical management of pediatric tumors, as well as the placement of the latest catheters and lines. Our pathologists are expert at diagnosing tumors, as well as disorders in blood and coagulation. Our pediatric radiologists are leaders in the latest imaging and interventional techniques, including CT scan, MRI scan, ultrasound, PET and nuclear medicine.
We coordinate care with a wide variety of pediatric sub-specialists, including colleagues in orthopedics, endocrinology, cardiology, immunology, neurology, urology, nephrology, radiation oncology, ophthalmology and many more. We also have the support of other disciplines, including nutrition, physical therapy, audiology and dental experts.
Rishi R. Lulla, MD, MS, is the chief of pediatric hematology/oncology at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and an international expert in the care of children and young adults with brain and spinal cord tumors. After completing his residency and fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago, Dr. Lulla spent several years as an attending physician on the pediatric neuro-oncology team at Northwestern. He has recently been given the Hero Award for outstanding dedication to pediatric neuro-oncology by the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, and was named one of Chicago’s Top Cancer Doctors by Chicago magazine.
Dr. Lulla’s scientific work has been published in more than 20 peer-reviewed journals and two books. He has presented his findings on pediatric central nervous system tumors at the local, national, and international levels, and he has served as principal investigator to multiple grant-sponsored research investigations. His current research activities are focused on translating laboratory findings into novel treatment for children with brain and spinal cord tumors. He served as the executive chair of the Children’s Brain Tumor Tissue Consortium and is an active member of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology Oncology, the Children’s Oncology Group, and the Society of Neuro-Oncology.
Roma Bhuta, DO, is a pediatrician who specializes in hematology/oncology at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. She is an assistant professor at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Bhuta is a member of the Children’s Oncology Group, the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, the Consortium for New England Childhood Cancer Survivors and the Dana Farber Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Consortium.
Wen-I Chang, MD, is a pediatrician in the division of pediatric hematology/oncology at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Her clinical interests include genomics in cancer and cancer predisposition syndromes. She is a member of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, the Children’s Oncology Group, and the American Association of Cancer Research.
Bradley DeNardo, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician who specializes in pediatric hematology and oncology at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. He is an assistant professor of pediatrics at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. After attending The Warren Alpert Medical School, Dr. DeNardo continued dedicating his time to the medical students there by instructing them in pediatrics for the following nine years. In addition, Dr. DeNardo is a consulting physician at Women and Infants Hospital.
Dr. DeNardo’s work has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and books, and he has also presented his research at the local, regional and international levels. He is a member of a number of professional societies, including Children’s Oncology Group and the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
Salley G. Pels, MD, is a pediatric hematologist/oncologist at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. She earned her medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine and completed her residency and fellowships at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital in Connecticut. She also received an additional year of training in hemostasis and thrombosis as a National Hemophilia Foundation Clinical Fellowship awardee. Her previous appointments included co-medical director of the Hemophilia Center and assistant professor of hematology/oncology in the department of pediatrics at Yale University School of Medicine.
Dr. Pels’s research interests include quality improvement in hemophilia care, hematologic disorders in pregnancy and immune thrombocytopenia therapies. She has served on the board of directors for the Thrombosis Hemostasis Society of North America and the Hemophilia Alliance, and is an active member of the American Thrombosis Hemostasis Network.
Emily Awopeju is a clinical research program coordinator in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology unit at Hasbro Children's Hospital. She earned her bachelor of science degree in medical laboratory science with a concentration in biotechnology from the University of Rhode Island. Awopeju has prior research experience with adult cardiovascular diseases and obtained her master of science in clinical research from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston.
Alana Sarah Deluty is a clinical research assistant in the pediatric hematology/oncology unit of Hasbro Children’s Hospital. She studied bioethics at the College of Wooster in Ohio and public health at the University of Pune in Pune, India. She recently returned to the US after spending a year in Malaysia on a Fulbright award. She has previously done research on polio prevention and the international surrogacy industry in India.
Julia Hersum is a research assistant with the pediatric hematology/oncology team at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. She earned her bachelor of science in biology from the University of Connecticut. She has previous experience in transplant research and the effects of depression on motivation.
Daniela Moreno, CRA, is a research assistant with pediatric hematology/oncology at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. She earned her bachelor of science in biological sciences and a bachelor of arts in modern languages in Spanish from Rhode Island College. She is certified in CPR/AED, phlebotomy and electrocardiogram procedures.
