Microvascular Surgery

Rhode Island Hospital's department of plastic surgery has an active microvascular surgery division. Microvascular surgery uses microscopes to suture together blood vessels of healthy tissue to a damaged area.

Led by specialists Lee Edstrom, MD and Richard Zienowicz, MD, the division emphasizes:

  • reconstruction in the head and neck area
  • lower extremity reconstruction
  • upper extremity reconstruction
  • replantation surgery

Microvascular research has also enhanced the department's breast reconstruction techniques.
