The Power of Creativity
Meris Yeaw writes poetry, practices yoga, draws, and takes in live guitar performances. They are just some of the activities offered to her through Newport Hospital’s Healing Through Creative Arts program.
Recreation therapy is offered at Rhode Island and Newport hospitals to all qualified patients on the adult inpatient psychiatric units. At Rhode Island Hospital, it is also offered on the geriatric unit.
The program incorporates daily art therapy, group therapy led by a licensed clinical social worker, and recreational activities such as stretching, meditation and interactive games. On a weekly basis, other therapeutic activities such as pet therapy, music therapy and guided meditation are offered.
The Healing Arts program is a large part of recreation therapy. Art therapy is used to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of any patient willing to participate.
The creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and to achieve insight into their experience.
