The blog post below was written by my friend and colleague Tom Roberts, executive director of the Vizient Research Institute, the nation’s leading health care performance improvement company.  He did me the honor of including my own thoughts on the COVID pandemic as the war of our lifetimes, an experience that will be transformational in terms of its long-term effects on the generations living through it.

As I told him, no one working on the front lines of the pandemic will ever be quite the same again. But in addition to the scars, there will be an enormous sense of pride and accomplishment for getting through it together. At a time when our community needed us the most, we stepped up to meet the challenge, and you don’t emerge from that unchanged.

I hope you find his reflections and thanks both moving and relevant. Please share with any colleagues who have left our field but may yet be convinced to return. As Tom put it, “To those who needed to step away, come back if you can. We need you now more than ever.”
