It Takes a Village: Collaborative Care of Eating Disorders

Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at 1:00p.m. - 4:15p.m.

This presentation will provide an introduction to the variety of clinical presentations of eating disorders, related diagnostic updates, and appropriate assessments, as illustrated through case presentations. Topics will include emerging science in the eating disorders field, medical implications of eating disorders, and evidence-based treatment approaches for adolescents with eating disorders, focusing on Family Based Treatment (FBT). Throughout the presentation, the roles in a multidisciplinary team will be emphasized, including a collaborative care approach. We will conclude with a panel discussion and plenty of time for questions and answers. I-clicker technology will be utilized for attendee surveys, and handouts will be provided of the slides, references, and resource links for attendees.

This event is part of the Bradley Conference Spring 2021 series.

Bradley Conference is designed to provide education for psychologists, social workers, physicians, nurses, certified counselors, speech/language and occupational therapists, teachers, milieu associates, and other professionals who work with children, adolescents or adults.  Topics address different behavioral health populations and treatment modalities and are intended to provide practical, state-of-the-art information.

Bradley Hospital’s clinical expertise, internationally renowned research, and academic affiliation with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University make the hospital a unique resource in all areas of behavioral health care.  We have designed a wide range of learning experiences to provide the training that behavioral health care professionals need to stay at the forefront of their fields.

Speakers

Diane DerMarderosian, MD is pediatric director of the Hasbro Children’s Partial Hospital Program and an assistant professor (clinical) in pediatrics at the department of psychiatry and human behavior at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. DerMarderosian graduated Amherst College with a BA in anthropology. She then attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine where she was selected to be part of the Humanities and Medicine Program. She completed her residency training in pediatrics at Brown University in 1999.  Prior to her current role as the pediatric director of the Hasbro Partial Hospital Program, she served as the medical director of the Hasbro Eating Disorders Program and was a primary care pediatrician in an inner-city health center. In addition to her expertise in taking care of patients with eating disorders, she specializes in working with patents with complex medical and psychological illnesses and their families. Currently she is on the executive board of the RIAAP, and also holds a Certification of Eating Disorders Specialist (CEDS) through IAEDP. She is an associate clinical Professor of pediatrics at The Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University.

Abigail Donaldson, MD is an attending physician at Hasbro Children’s Hospital's division of adolescent medicine and medical director at the Hasbro Eating Disorders Program. She is also an associate professor (clinical) in pediatrics at the department of psychiatry and human behavior at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. Donaldson received her medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. She pursued residency in pediatrics at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and subsequently completed a fellowship in adolescent medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She is board certified in both pediatrics and adolescent medicine. Dr. Donaldson is an attending physician in the division of adolescent medicine at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and the medical director of the Hasbro Eating Disorders Program. Dr. Donaldson is an associate clinical professor of pediatrics at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She is a certified specialist in eating disorders by the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals.

Christina Tortolani, PhD is a staff psychologist at the department of child and adolescent psychiatry at the Hasbro Partial Hospital Program at Rhode Island Hospital and adjunct assistant professor at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. Tortolani is an assistant professor at Rhode Island College’s graduate program in mental health counseling where she is the clinical director of field placements. She is also an adjunct assistant professor of psychiatry and human behavior at The Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University. She is a certified eating disorder specialist and has worked with children, adolescents and adults with eating disorders within various contexts and levels of treatment, utilizing evidence based treatment models. She also provides clinical supervision and trainings, and is published in the field of eating disorders. Currently, she has several grant funded projects aimed at disseminating evidence- based practices for eating disorders within the RI community.

Heather Hower, MSW, LICSW, ACSW, QCSW has over 15 years of research experience within the areas of bipolar disorders and eating disorders. She holds a master’s degree in social work (MSW) from the University of California, Berkeley, and a bachelor of arts (BA) in psychology from Brown University.

Hower has served as a project director and faculty research associate at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and school of public health, and a faculty associate specialist at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, Eating Disorders Center for Treatment and Research.

She is also on the Board of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), including conference committee co-chair, Research Advisory Council (RAC) member, and Feeding Hope Fund (FHF) contributor, is an eating disorders grant reviewer for the Department of Defense (DOD), a faculty member and conference presenter at Academy for Eating Disorders, a conference proposal reviewer for the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP), a manuscript reviewer for the International Journal of Eating Disorders (IJED), Clinical Psychology Review (CPR), and Journal of Affective Disorders (JAD), an advocate for the Eating Disorder Coalition (EDC), a research assistant for Jenni Schaefer’s forthcoming book on trauma, and a writer of eating disorder blogs for NEDA, Jenni Schaefer, Project HEAL, and Medium. She has also recorded podcasts for ED Matters by Gurze/Salucore.

Hower is the author or co-author of over 35 peer-reviewed publications, 30 posters, and ten panel/symposium presentations. She has research profiles on Brown University Researchers @Brown-Vivo, Research Gate, PubMed, Google Scholar, and LinkedIn.

Her current eating disorder research interests include capitalizing on eating disorder traits as strengths, promoting temperament-based treatments, and defining recovery. She has submitted papers and conference presentation proposals related to these topics which are under review.
