Supporting Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Thursday, November 21, 2024 at 10:00a.m. - 12:45p.m.

Psychologists from the Bradley Schools and Bradley Hospital will present a workshop on working with students with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities. Drawing off the evidence base and years of experience, Drs. Lamb and Lichtenstein will discuss how factors commonly associated with autism may present as behavioral and other challenges in the classroom and share tools to better understand and predict these challenges. They will help participants consider a range of strategies to both prevent such challenging behaviors and deal with them when/if they arise. Finally, the presenters will consider how adults’ own emotions may quite understandably interact with youth behavioral challenges.

Speakers

Dave Lichtenstein, PhD, is a licensed psychologist at Bradley’s Verrecchia Clinic for Children with Autism and Developmental Disabilities, and a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. In addition, he serves as a consulting clinician in Bradley’s AWARE program, which provides free consultation to public schools regarding behavioral and social-emotional supports for students and schools more broadly.  Prior to serving at the Verrecchia Clinic, he worked for 13 years in the Bradley School system, a network of therapeutic school serving students with a range of academic and developmental/behavioral/psychiatric challenges.

Alexis Lamb, PhD, is a licensed psychologist at the Bradley School in Providence, a highly specialized therapeutic school for children and adolescents with intensive developmental, psychiatric, and behavioral needs that interfere with their ability to access their education.  Dr. Lamb has worked for the Bradley Schools since 2012, primarily with students with intellectual disability and Autism.  She has recently taken on the role of Assistant Director with a focus on overseeing the programming for students with developmental disabilities who qualify for Alternate Assessment.  Dr. Lamb is also an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where she facilitates seminars and supervises residents and post-doctoral fellows in psychology who are completing their training in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior (DPHB).
