Learn How to Prevent Diabetes
On Wednesday, Sept. 21, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Newport Hospital will offer the community lecture, “Sweet Success: How a Life Coach Can Help You Prevent Diabetes.” Penny Fitch, Newport Health Equity Zone resident consultant and diabetes prevention program lifestyle coach, will lead a discussion on steps individuals can take to help prevent or delay the disease.
“By making a few basic lifestyle modifications such as eating healthily and increasing activity, it is possible for people to lower or eliminate their risk for diabetes,” said Fitch. “Even moderate weight loss can significantly improve a person’s health and reduce his or her likelihood of developing diabetes and other diseases.”
According to Fitch, in a recent study conducted by the National Institutes of Health, 58 percent of individuals focused solely on losing weight and being more active were able to successfully cut their risk for diabetes, with those over age 60 cutting their risk by 71 percent.
Now in its second year, the Newport Hospital free lecture series offers the community a firsthand opportunity to learn more about different health issues. The lecture on Sept. 21 will be held in Newport Hospital’s Gudoian Conference Room, just off the main lobby of the hospital at 11 Friendship Street, Newport. Parking is free and valet parking is available. Registration is not required, but seating is limited. To reserve a seat, call 401-845-1492 or sign up online at www.newporthospital.org. Free blood pressure screenings will also be provided from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and light refreshments will be served.
