Newport Hospital Earns Top Patient Safety Score

October 31, 2017

Each of the three Lifespan hospitals eligible for the rating receives an ‘A’

Newport Hospital received an “A” in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade released today by The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit health care ratings organization. Grades of A, B, C, D and F are given to hospitals based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms.

“Patient safety is always our highest priority, and we work tremendously hard to ensure that we meet the most rigorous national safety standards,” said Crista F. Durand, president of Newport Hospital. “This validation of our commitment to safety is really a tribute to our hundreds of providers and staff, who work so hard to deliver safe, effective, compassionate care. They put patients at the center of everything they do, and it shows.”

Newport Hospital joins Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital, the two other Lifespan partners eligible for the ratings, in earning top grades.

“Our outstanding professionals work diligently every day to ensure that patients receive the highest quality care and best possible outcomes in the spirit of delivering health with care,” said Cathy E. Duquette, Ph.D., R.N., executive vice president for nursing affairs at Lifespan. “We are proud and honored that Leapfrog has recognized the tremendous investment in continuous improvement at each of our hospitals.”

“It takes consistent, unwavering dedication to patients to achieve the highest standards of patient safety. An A Safety Grade recognizes hospitals for this accomplishment,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.

Nationwide, 832 hospitals earned an A.

Developed under the guidance of a blue ribbon national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice each year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.
