May 12, 2015

Doctor up closeNewport Hospital will host the latest in its 2015 series of free community lectures on Tuesday, May 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Entitled, “Everything You Wanted to Know about Cancer and Blood Disorders and Are Not Afraid to Ask,” the May lecture will feature a discussion with hematologist/oncologist Alessandro Papa, MD, a specialist in adult hematology and adult oncology.

“Navigating your way through a diagnosis of cancer or a blood disease such as anemia, leukemia or lymphoma can without a doubt be frightening and overwhelming,” says Papa. “There are signs and symptoms to be aware of that can help to ensure that cancer treatment and care is delivered as quickly as possible. The earlier the disease is found and treated, the greater the chances for a successful outcome.”

Newport Hospital’s lecture series, which launched in January, is geared to providing the community with helpful educational information and an opportunity to connect one on one with Newport Hospital clinicians. Lectures take place in the Gudoian Conference Room, which is just off the main lobby at Newport Hospital at 11 Friendship Street. Parking is free and valet parking is available. Free blood pressure screenings are available before the lecture from 6 to 6:30 p.m.

Registration is not required for the community lectures, but seating is limited. To reserve a seat, call 401-845-1492. Light refreshments will be served.

On Wednesday, June 10 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., the next Newport Hospital community lecture will be led by interventional radiologist Jason Vachon, MD, who will discuss the latest techniques for eliminating varicose veins.
