Certified Nurse Midwife

Cynthia Voytas(she/her), MSN, CNM, is a certified nurse midwife with Lifespan Physician Group, Obstetrics and Gynecology. She studied comparative literature and German at the University of Wisconsin and completed her midwifery education at Frontier Nursing University.

As part of her German education, she studied in Bonn, Germany for one year and was fortunate to befriend a German midwife and was immediately intrigued by her stories of birth, prenatal and postpartum care. Cynthia was in Germany when the Berlin Wall fell, and counts being present for that transformative moment in history paramount.  A piece of the wall is one of her most prized possessions. She returned from Germany and worked for many years in the publishing industry. One day, traveling for work, she saw an article about a midwife practicing in San Francisco. This sparked a long-time dream of becoming a midwife. She has worked for over two decades in women’s health and midwifery.

Cynthia has traveled widely, teaching secondary school in Slovakia, hiking in the Alps and on Mauritius, and spending a year in Ghana, where she met with other healthcare workers in a variety of settings including midwives.

She is the former president of the RI chapter of the American College of Nurse-Midwives. Her areas of interest are physiologic birth, adolescent care, menopausal transition, and teaching future midwives.

Cynthia has three grown children and lives in Scituate, RI with her husband of over 25 years. She loves travel, gardening, reading, camping, skiing, and hiking. Her greatest joy is time spent with her family.
