Ian C. Michelow, MD

Pediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist, Hasbro Children's Hospital

Ian Michelow, MD is a specialist in pediatric infectious diseases at Hasbro Children's Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital and an associate professor of pediatrics at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. Michelow earned his medical degree followed by a master of medicine degree from University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. 

He served residencies at Johannesburg Academic Complex, and, later, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He completed a clinical and research fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; a fellowship in pediatric intensive care at Guy’s Hospital in London; and a research fellowship in molecular medicine at Boston Children's Hospital/ Harvard Medical School.

Since 1998, Dr. Michelow has conducted clinical and laboratory-based research in the fields of pediatrics, infectious diseases, and immunology. At Rhode Island Hospital’s Center for International Health Research, Dr. Michelow is studying novel falciparum malaria vaccine candidates to protect mothers and their children from this life-threatening disease. 

He also conducts clinical research related to Ebola virus disease, pediatric osteoarticular infections, and interactions between viral and bacterial infections and host immunity.

Dr. Michelow has documented his research in dozens of articles published in peer-reviewed journals.

He is the recipient of multiple research foundation awards, as well as numerous teaching awards at the Alpert Medical School.
