Teri Pearlstein, MD is director of Women’s Behavioral Medicine at the Women’s Medicine Collaborative. A professor of psychiatry and human behavior and professor of medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Dr. Pearlstein received a medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed her residency in adult psychiatry at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Pearlstein is board certified in psychiatry.

Dr. Pearlstein is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and past president of the North American Society for Psychosocial Obstetrics and Gynecology. Her clinical interests include depression and anxiety disorders in women, particularly in relation to the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, postpartum period, and menopause.

Research

Dr. Pearlstein's major research interests have focused on the assessment and treatment of women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Seminal studies have included the impact of PMDD on functioning and the efficacy of antidepressant medications and oral contraceptives in PMDD. Dr. Pearlstein has recently been conducting treatment trials in perinatal depression. She is currently involved in a four-site R01 examining the efficacy of adjunctive integrated chronotherapy for pregnant women with depression (PI: Katherine Sharkey, MD, PhD). She has recently been involved in a multisite trial examining an oral neurosteroid for severe postpartum depression (Sage Therapeutics) and a two-site R01 evaluating the differential efficacy of sertraline, pill placebo, and interpersonal psychotherapy in women with postpartum depression (PIs: Caron Zlotnick, PhD and Michael O’Hara, PhD).
