Tracy Madsen, MD, PhD, MCTR, is an emergency medicine physician and associate director of the division of sex and gender in emergency medicine. A clinical epidemiologist, Dr. Madsen is a stroke researcher in the department of emergency medicine.  

Dr. Madsen earned her medical degree at Boston University and completed a residency in emergency medicine followed by a two-year research fellowship and a master's degree in clinical and translational research. She completed a PhD in epidemiology at the Brown University School of Public Health. 

Dr. Madsen’s research focuses on sex- and gender-based medicine, women's health, acute management of stroke and transient ischemic attack, and gender disparities in the physician workforce. She receives funding from the National Institutes of Health to study stroke in women and sex differences in stroke prevention. 

She is a fellow of the American Heart Association and the American College of Emergency Physicians and is a member of the editorial board of Neurology. Dr. Madsen has published more than 65 peer-reviewed manuscripts, presents nationally and internationally, and has established an international presence in the field of sex and gender differences in stroke as well as gender biases in academic medicine. 

Dr. Madsen has been honored with the Academy for Women in Emergency Medicine Early Career Award and the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award from The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
