The Miriam Hospital is one of just 120 hospitals across the country to be recognized as a Top Hospital by The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization focused on health care safety and quality.

Close to 2,100 hospitals were considered for Top Hospital awards in four categories, with The Miriam being included among the "Top Teaching Hospitals" -- a select group of just 55 hospitals nationwide. The prestigious honor, which The Miriam has received for three consecutive years, follows the “A” grade that Leapfrog recently awarded The Miriam for the eighth time in a row in its semi-annual ratings.

“This is a big deal,” said hospital president Arthur J. Sampson. “Our top priority, day in and day out, is the care of our patients and their safety. Leapfrog shares that same focus and is highly regarded for its hospital ratings. To be named to its list of Top Hospitals is not just an honor, it’s an affirmation of how our team at The Miriam – from board members to support staff, medical providers to management – works successfully and collaboratively to deliver care that’s on par with the best hospitals in country.”

That consistency in quality has led to a series of major honors for The Miriam recently, Sampson noted, adding, “We’re on quite a roll.”

Recently, U.S. News & World Report named The Miriam a 2019-20 Best Regional Hospital and Top Hospital in Rhode Island, in addition to rating its urology program 27th on a list of the top 50 in the country. Prior to that, The Miriam made the 2019 IBM Watson Health Top 100 and its Intensive Care Unit was recognized with a gold Beacon Award for Excellence. The Miriam also continues its 20-year run of maintaining Magnet designation, the highest nursing credential in the country.

Leapfrog announced its Top Hospitals on Monday in Washington, D.C. Hospitals that made the list met a rigorous set of standards across many areas of hospital care, including infection rates, safe surgery practices, and capacity to prevent medication errors. To qualify, hospitals must rank tops among peers in the 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest known standards for quality and patient safety.

“We are pleased to recognize The Miriam Hospital as a 2019 Leapfrog Top Hospital,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “This demonstrates extraordinary dedication to patients and to the Providence community. We congratulate the board, staff and clinicians whose efforts made this honor possible and know they share pride in this achievement.”
