A Common, But Complex Condition

Epilepsy is one of the most common and most debilitating neurological disorders worldwide. Approximately one percent of the U.S. population is affected by this condition, but the severity varies in each person.

Epilepsy is a complex condition that makes a child susceptible to seizures, which are a result of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Epilepsy can have a significant impact on quality of life, with seizures and other accompanying conditions like depression and learning disabilities impacting school and job performance.

Early diagnosis is essential to treating and living with epilepsy. Medical interventions for epilepsy continue to evolve, so if caught early, the prognosis can be manageable, with freedom from seizures and a normal quality of life.

Sophie's Story

Sophie, suffering from seizures and the side effects of the medications designed to stop them, turned to Hasbro Children’s Hospital for a specialized brain surgery aimed at curing her epilepsy. Today she is full of energy and enjoying her life again.
