Daphne Koinis-Mitchell, PhD

Daphne Koinis-Mitchell, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist with an interest in pediatric psychology. She has a particular interest in working with urban children with chronic illnesses and psychological concerns. She is currently director of the Community Asthma Programs at Hasbro Children's Hospital and the principal investigator of several US National Institutes of Health-funded studies focusing on cultural and contextual factors affecting disease management behaviors and morbidity in urban children.

Dr. Koinis-Mitchell received her BA from Boston College. She completed her graduate work at Columbia University and the University of Massachusetts.

Research Interests

Dr. Koinis-Mitchell's primary research interests involve the examination of how urban living and cultural factors impact children and families' chronic disease management. She has focused much of her research on pediatric asthma health disparities, given the prevalence of asthma in urban settings and ethnic minority groups. She applies a resilience-based theoretical framework to her research. 

Dr. Koinis-Mitchell is the principal investigator of a study funded by the National Institutes of Health that examines the co-occurrence of sleep quality and academic performance in urban children who have asthma and allergic rhinitis, as well as healthy children.
