Rhode Island Hospital Inpatient Consultation Services

The Addiction Medicine Consult Liaison Service at Rhode Island Hospital aids patients struggling with alcohol or drug use along the path of recovery by enhancing their motivation to make choices for the betterment of their physical and emotional health.

Consisting of physicians and independent clinical social workers that specialize in the treatment of substance use disorders, the service assists patients—any individual admitted to Rhode Island Hospital for primary medical, surgical, and trauma related conditions—with interventions inclusive of empathic support, education on condition, symptom, and medications for substance use disorders, as well as guidance in the navigation of available treatments both within the Lifespan system as well as outside of it.

The Consult Liaison Service helps patients:

  • Clarify their understanding of their alcohol or drug use
  • Identify strategies to aid in any decided change in their alcohol or drug use pattern
  • Access treatment recommendations, including initiation of medications and connections to community resources

FRIENDS WAY

FRIENDS WAY offers specialized bereavement groups for children and teens affected by suicide or addiction. The organization facilitates biweekly sessions in which children teens and young adults share their feelings and reactions to grief in an honest and open way. During the sessions they are also given the opportunity to express themselves through creative activities such as painting, drawing and clay sculpting.

These support groups will allow participants to be vulnerable as they seek community after a sudden loss from suicide or addiction. Members will share common experiences, strength and hope with each other, while discussing complicated emotions, such as anxiety, shame, depression, and anger.

There is no fee for participation in our programs. All sessions are facilitated by a qualified clinician and professionally trained volunteers. For information on joining this program, please visit the FRIENDS WAY website or call 401-921-0980.
