inCLASS Observational Tool

The Individualized Classroom Assessment Scoring System (inCLASS) is an observational tool used to understand preschool children's interactions with their teachers (positive engagement with teacher, communication, conflict), their peers (sociability, communication, assertiveness, conflict) and tasks/learning opportunities (task engagement, self-reliance, behavior control) within the classroom.

The inCLASS is a standardized, reliable, and valid way to assess aspects of children's behavior that are linked with their school readiness and adjustment. Training to become a reliable inCLASS observer consists of a two-day (16-hour) training provided by a certified trainer to learn about the observation system and practice. The training is followed by a reliability assessment.
