Pediatric Imaging Services

Minimal Exposure to Radiation

The Center for Pediatric Imaging at Hasbro Children's Hospital invests in the latest, most advanced imaging technology. Our CT scanner is equipped with special radiation dose reduction software to assure the lowest possible radiation exposures and the highest image resolution.

Multiple Tests and Procedures, One Visit

Our medical team excels at collaborating with each child’s doctor and with other hospital departments to complete multiple imaging tests and diagnostic procedures on a child during a single visit. Fewer visits mean fewer absences from school and normal routines. Whenever possible you can stay with your child during the tests.

Making MRI Entertaining for Children

We realize that it is sometimes a challenge to lie still and do nothing, especially for children. To offer diversion and alleviate anxiety or boredom, we have CinemaVision, an entertainment system that makes MRI entertaining. CinemaVision is a 3D virtual reality system with multiple entertainment options from standard video, television and PC input, while allowing two-way communication with technologists. The patient wears a comfortable, lightweight headset that delivers an experience that simulates watching a high-resolution 62-inch screen from less than 6 feet away.

Younger patients may receive sedation services as needed; older patients typically do not need sedation. Whenever possible, you may stay with your child during the tests.

3T MRI

In November of 2019, the Center for Pediatric Imaging launched a new, state-of-the-art 3T MRI unit at Hasbro Children's Hospital. The 3T GE Premier has demonstrated exceptional image quality along with some imaging advancements enabling higher resolution scans with relatively shorter scan times. In addition to routine pediatric and adult imaging, this scanner also provides our neurosurgical department with enhanced functional brain MRI techniques for their preoperative planning and approach, and is utilized for real time image guidance during brain laser ablation procedures. The scanner coil (camera) design and technology allows accommodations to patients' specific needs and help in positioning comfort.

American College of Radiology (ACR) Accreditation

Hasbro Children's Hospital was the first in 2017 and remains the only, ACR Accredited Diagnostic Imaging Center in the state of Rhode Island. This is because of the help provided by lead ultrasound technologist, Paula Kiley, and the Rhode Island Hospital ultrasound department. The first pediatric registered sonographer at Rhode Island Hospital, Kiley has been designated a Lifespan CARE Champion by her peers. This Lifespan award recognizes that Kiley excels at bringing Lifespan's CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence) to the work she does with pediatric patients and their families.
