Critical Care Services at Hasbro Children's Hospital
The physicians and staff of the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admit and treat infants and children through 18 years of age.
If a child needs intensive care, we bring the child to our pediatric intensive care unit as soon as possible, often within minutes. If a critically ill child has been taken first to another hospital, we have a pediatric transport team, consisting of a doctor, an intensive care nurse and a respiratory therapist (if needed), that can be dispatched to the referring hospital to help stabilize the child and bring the child to Hasbro Children's Hospital.
Our pediatric intensive care unit has state-of-the-art design, organization and equipment, and is staffed by specially trained physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and a broad-based team of professionals with expertise in the care of critically ill children. The PICU includes two suites of eight rooms each, located around a central nursing station. Each child has his or her own fully monitored and specialized room.
Parents and/or guardians of children in PICU are welcome to stay at the bedside as much as possible, can participate in morning rounds and may remain with their child for most procedures. PICU family areas include a kitchenette, bathroom with shower, a private consultation room and a comfortable area for resting.
All of our attending physicians are board certified in pediatrics and pediatric critical care, and are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our pediatric and critical care physicians are complemented by four board-certified pediatric surgeons for trauma critical care with expertise in specific elements of preoperative critical care.
Referring doctors at other hospitals can contact our transport team by calling 401-444-6600.
