Pediatric Palliative Care

Children’s Integrative Therapy Pain Management and Supportive Care

The Children’s Integrative Therapy Pain Management and Supportive Care (CHIPS) Program at Hasbro Children’s Hospital provides comfort and support, as well as pain and symptom management for children with serious or chronic illnesses. Some of the children we care for have life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses. Our goal is to help meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of these children and their families.

Our family-centered approach and multidisciplinary care means that we are dedicated to providing a compassionate, fun and coordinated blend of services that support both curative and comfort care, and to preserving the dignity and quality of life for our patients and their families.

The goals of our program are to:

  • Provide a family-centered approach to improving the quality of life of the child and family by addressing their physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs
  • Collaborate with the primary care team to develop a comprehensive plan of care that combines palliative care with other treatment options, as guided by the child and family
  • Facilitate communication among the child, family and primary care team
  • Provide supportive care to help establish a sense of normalcy and maintain quality of life
  • Assist the child and family with difficult decision making that best reflects their values, hopes, and beliefs
  • Support early recognition and management of pain and distressing symptoms
  • Provide creative ways to manage a child’s pain, while allowing the child to be as alert and happy as possible

This program is a grant-supported initiative, funded through philanthropic support. Our integrated care program comes at no cost to the families.
