Qualitative Science and Methods Training Program
The Qualitative Science and Methods Training Program (QSMTP) at the Center for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine (CBPM) is dedicated to equipping researchers and fellows with essential skills in qualitative methods, enabling them to proficiently collect, analyze, and interpret non-numerical data.
QSMTP involves the work of three CBPM faculty: lead Kate Guthrie, with Rochelle Rosen, PhD and Sara Vargas serving on the Training team.
Qualitative Methods
Qualitative methods play a crucial role in understanding how individuals subjectively perceive and experience situations, making them invaluable tools in fields such as healthcare and patient experiences that quantitative data alone may not capture.

QMSTP as a Methods Core
QMSTP holds a vital position as a Methods Core within the Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior at Brown Medical School. As part of this esteemed position, we collaborate with numerous partners within The Miriam and Brown Medical School to support and strengthen qualitative research initiatives.
Advance CTR and BERD
CBPM faculty play an active role in research training and mentoring across Brown and Lifespan networks. Through Advance CTR, the Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design Core (BERD) offers researchers the tools to design, interpret, and publish impactful health research. Dr. Rochelle Rosen serves as the Co-Director of the Advance-CTR Biostatistics Core.
BERD is committed to providing multidisciplinary collaborative support for quantitative and qualitative research design, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination. This service works seamlessly with and within existing health research structures, providing accessible training in epidemiology, biostatistics, study design, and qualitative and mixed methods to clinical and translational researchers and research staff. BERD delivers training in a variety of formats, both synchronous and asynchronous, using the latest educational methods and technologies. Additionally, BERD facilitates the development and dissemination of innovative design and analytic methods and tools for clinical and translational research.
