Genetic Counseling

Our prenatal genetic counselor works with individuals or couples who have an increased chance of having a child with a birth defect or genetic condition. Individuals who are pregnant or considering having a child in the future can meet with our prenatal genetic counselor to understand their risk more clearly. They can discuss options for prenatal screening, carrier testing, diagnostic testing (for example, amniocentesis), and/or assisted reproduction techniques such as in vitro fertilization with preimplantation genetic testing.

Genetic counseling before you become pregnant can address concerns about factors that might affect your baby during infancy or childhood.

For individuals who do not have an increased chance of having a child with a birth defect or genetic condition, a genetic counselor can help you analyze your family history and understand routine prenatal screening and testing options. Some routine testing before a pregnancy begins can help determine if there are any increased risks.

Who May Benefit from Genetic Counseling

  • Pregnant women 35 years or older
  • Couples with a personal or family history of a genetic condition, intellectual disability, or birth defect
  • Women with abnormal perinatal blood test results
  • Women with a history of pregnancy loss (miscarriage or stillbirth)
  • Women with abnormal pregnancy ultrasound findings
  • Individuals taking certain medications during pregnancy
  • Men and women at increased risk of being a carrier of a genetic condition (some diseases are more common in certain ethnicities)
  • Couples who would like to have in-depth discussions of routine screening options

Depending on the reason for your referral, you can expect the genetic counselor to:

  • Review your medical history, your partner’s medical history, and your family’s medical history
  • Discuss your chances of having a child with a genetic condition
  • Help you explore options for additional testing before and during pregnancy
  • Help you interpret screening or testing results
  • Provide information about any problems detected during pregnancy and help you understand your options
  • Provide emotional support
  • Refer you to support networks

3D and 4D Ultrasounds

Our ultrasound units are equipped with state-of-the-art, 3D and 4D technology. Like regular ultrasounds, 3D and 4D ultrasounds use sound waves to create an image of your baby in the womb. 3D ultrasounds create a three-dimensional image of your baby, allowing a more realistic imaging of your baby’s position and features. 4D ultrasounds create a live video effect, so you can watch your baby in motion, such as smiling or yawning.
